Hey fellow hockey fans! Remember when the Oilers took Nail Yakupov first overall in the 2012 draft? Seems like a giant "what if" moment for Edmonton, given how his NHL stint turned out. Imagine if they picked someone like Morgan Rielly for a robust defense, or Filip Forsberg to supercharge their offense. Heck, Andrei Vasilevskiy could've been a groundbreaking choice to stabilize their goaltending! Sure, it's all hindsight, but pondering these alternate realities is as much a part of being a fan as watching the game itself.
As for my take? I'm betting the Oilers could've been serious Stanley Cup contenders by now with Vasilevskiy between the pipes or Forsberg lighting up alongside McDavid. It's those kind of missed opportunities that make us armchair GMs, always dreaming of what could've been. Go Oilers! Right? How about we chalk it up as a lesson in draft strategy and look to the future for our hockey thrills!
